Active Minds, Active Bodies: Sports and Movement at SISOG

At SISOG, we understand that a healthy body supports a healthy mind. That's why we've woven physical activity into the very fabric of our curriculum and extended it beyond the school day. From the youngest learners to our upper primary students, we strive to cultivate a lifelong love of movement and sports.

Building Foundational Skills in Early Years

For our Preschool and Lower Primary students, the emphasis is on "Motricity." This isn't just playtime; it's a carefully structured program led by our dedicated classroom teachers. These activities focus on developing fundamental movement skills, laying the groundwork for future athletic pursuits and overall well-being. Think of it as building a strong foundation of balance, coordination, and spatial awareness—essential tools for navigating the world.

Structured Sports and Skill Development in Primary School

As students progress to Middle and Upper Primary, they benefit from weekly sports lessons taught by our specialized sports teacher, Lovisa. These aren't your typical gym classes. We aim for variety and engagement, introducing students to a diverse range of activities. From the strategic thinking of invasion games to the refreshing fun of water games, the precision of ice skating, the power of athleticism, the unique skills of frisbee, and the strength and flexibility of gymnastics, we ensure every student finds something they enjoy.

Celebrating Swedish Traditions and Athletic Spirit

Beyond our regular curriculum, we infuse a spirit of friendly competition and cultural connection through two annual traditions linked to our Swedish heritage.

  • SUF-VM (Swedish Schools Abroad Athletics Competition)
Every October, our students join a global network of Swedish schools in a virtual athletics competition. Students participate in a variety of athletic events, and their results are submitted for global ranking. The top three performers in each category receive medals, celebrating individual achievement. This event fosters a sense of global community and friendly competition.

  • Vasaloppet
We host our own version of the iconic Swedish cross-country ski race (adapted to running in the summer for warmer months) for our Primary students (3P-8P). This event emphasizes participation, effort, and the joy of outdoor activity. Every child who participates receives a medal, reinforcing the value of perseverance and a love for movement.

Guided Play During Recess

Bilingual Primary students inclusion during recess

Our goal for this guided play is to have children who are able to focus when needed and also safer children. Through guided play, we can capture children who would not otherwise have had a playmate that breaks. We can create new games that the students want to play at later times. The students get an opportunity to create a WE-feeling where everyone is respected and has a sense of belonging, just like some of SISOG’s values.

Extending Activity Beyond School Hours

We recognize that learning doesn't stop when the school bell rings. Our after-school sports programs provide additional opportunities for students to develop their skills and participate in team sports. Past offerings have included football lessons with InterSoccer, supported by SISOG staff, and multisport activities led by our own team.
